Root-treated teeth are disinfected dead teeth. Even the best endodontics will not be able to completely seal a root so that it is bacteria-proof. Accessory lateral canals and the endo-perio continuum via the hollow dentin tubules remain intact. The dead tooth that was once an organ with its own nerve and blood supply remains a dead post in the oral cavity. It can become colonised by various, and in some cases, unknown species of anaerobic, pathogenic bacteria that break down the remaining organic tissue and secrete harmful metabolic products (toxins).

These pathogenic bacteria use the amino acids cysteine and methionine to produce highly toxic and potentially carcinogenic hydrogen sulphide bonds (thioether/methanethiol) as by-products of anaerobic metabolism. These toxins could be associated with various systemic and organ diseases due to the irreversible inhibition of the active centre of many important enzymes that are important for life processes. The inhibition of important enzymes in the respiratory energy chain of the mitochondria energy cells of our body has been proven in vitro. Each chew on this tooth releases these bacteria and particularly the toxins into the lymphatic system of the surrounding tissue. From here, they enter the bloodstream (focal infection) and the whole body.

Root-treated and dead teeth are a so-called neuromodulatory trigger in the human body. From a practical point of view, root treatments are carried out to preserve the chewing function, however, from a medical perspective, root treatments can be viewed critically when a disease is present in the human organism.

In this case, the infected tissue and bacteria in the area need to be removed in order to prevent the infection from worsening or returning. With integrative root canal treatment, it is very likely that the natural tooth can be saved and that you’ll soon be pain-free.

However, it is critical that all of the infected tissue and pathogenic material be properly removed during root canal treatment. If some of it is left behind, it can lead to reinfection. What is Regenerative Endodontics?

This is a procedure where we try and heal the inflamed or recently infected nerve and blood vessel tissue by removing the infection and exposing the nerve and blood vessel to use regenerative techniques such as LASER therapy, Ozone therapy & Biodentine in combination discussed below to prevent root canal therapy or an extraction.

What is Biodentine?

Biodentine is arguably the most biocompatible and bioactive and actively promotes pulp (nerve) healing as well as remineralisation of dentine (contains bioactive tricalcium silicate material). Biodentine can be used therefore wherever dentine (deep material inside the tooth) is damaged both in the crown and in the root and particularly where this damage is threatening to the health of the nerve and vitality of the tooth.

How Does Biodentine Work?

Biodentine forms natural ‘micro-mechanical attachments’ into the dentine giving an excellent seal, allowing only minimal tooth preparation and helping to eliminate sensitivity that can be experienced after conventional treatment. The final Biodentine restoration is highly comparable to human dentine showing similar mechanical properties and behaviour.

If a cavity in a tooth is very deep & close to the nerve, the nerve will likely be affected by the decay, treatment to restore it and the nerve may react becoming sensitive and painful and sometimes ultimately will die off from inflammation requiring either a root filling or extraction of the tooth.

Biodentine promotes natural healing of the nerve by stimulating it to lay down a protective layer of dentine without irritating the nerve in any way, it increases the likelihood that the nerve will recover and survive in the longer term (this has even been shown to be the case where the nerve has been significantly damaged already).

Can Biodentine Be Used As A Permanent Filling?

Biodentine will need to be covered with a permanent restoration, such as a white filling, either immediately or left as a “temporary” base for up to 6 months, and then permanently restored at the second visit. The latter is usually only done when the nerve is badly affected, to ensure that it has settled prior to permanent restoration.

We combine these already excellent material properties with the healing capability of Ozone and LASER dental therapy to increase the survival chances of the tooth even further.
