Better Breathing, Swallowing & Chewing
MyoFUNctional is a programme designed to support the development of healthy breathing, swallowing and chewing patterns.
Research suggests that oral habits, breathing patterns and muscle function can influence how the jaws and teeth develop during childhood. The programme therefore focuses on helping children develop healthier oral habits alongside monitoring.
Some theories of craniofacial development, such as the Functional Matrix Theory proposed by Melvin Moss, suggest that muscle function and breathing patterns may influence how the jaws develop during childhood.
The programme combines guided exercises with the use of a Myobrace appliance. These exercises aim to encourage nasal breathing, improved tongue posture and balanced muscle function.
The Myobrace appliance is a removable device worn for a short period during the day and overnight while sleeping. It works alongside the exercises to support healthier oral function during growth and development.
Treatment is generally most suitable for children aged approximately 6 to 14 while the jaws are still developing. In some cases this approach may help guide dental development and reduce the severity of crowding. However, every child is different and some patients may still require orthodontic treatment such as braces later.
The success of the programme depends heavily on regular appliance use and completing the recommended exercises.

How does it work?
Wondering exactly how our program works? Read below about just how simple it is to get your child started on our MyoFUNctional program!
STEP 2
STEP 1
All participants of the MyoFUNctional course need to have a Zoom consultation with Dr. Seb to check that this is appropriate for the child.
This session is £55 and 15 minutes long.
Once you have attended this session if your child is a good candidate you will be sent the link to book on.
Once your device has arrived you can get started!
Every 3 months, you will be prompted to fill in another assessment and upload updated mouth pictures as well as to book your 3 monthly review calls with our Myofucntional therapist.
Each month, new content and exercises will be released in your online learning portal.
STEP 3
You will sign up to our online course either paying in full or in monthly payments. You will then be sent your login details.
You’ll be asked to complete an initial assessment and upload pictures of your child’s mouth.
Once Seb has assessed your child’s mouth size, we will then post you your MyoFUNctional kit including the first device you need.

Majority of children now have crooked teeth, which is evident as early as five years of age and is often attributed to hereditary factors. However, rather than blame genetics for crooked teeth and poor jaw development, modern research has produced evidence that point to other causes.
Mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, reverse swallowing and thumb sucking (known as incorrect myofunctional habits) are the real causes.
Allergies, asthma and an open mouth posture also contribute to incorrect jaw development. Growing up, most of us have had one or more of these myofunctional problems, which may have been the cause of incorrect dental and facial development.
-
If a child is a mouth breather, their tongue won't rest in the roof of the mouth which often results in an underdeveloped upper jaw and restricted forward growth of the lower jaw. Along with the concern of crowding, incorrect development of the upper jaw can affect a child's breathing by restricting airway.
As well as affecting jaw and facial development, the medical profession now recognises that mouth breathing is abnormal and is also one of the main contributors of Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) problems. Symptoms include snoring, morning tiredness and learning difficulties with extreme cases stopping breathing at times during the night. This is the medical condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea - OSA. If left untreated, SDB can lead to significant and serious health problems that cause poorer quality of life in adulthood.
Symptoms commonly associated with Sleep Disordered Breathing (SDB) can include:
Developmental and behavioural problems
Snoring
Gasping
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea
Interrupted sleep
Bedwetting

Great question! It is really important that all children before starting have an online consultation with Seb. You will be required to take photos of the mouth and fill in a pre-evavulation questionnaire. You can book in for this session for £55 for Seb to assess and for you to ask any questions.
-
The course costs £799 if you pay in full or £99 per month for the 9 months which equals £891. The reason it costs more for the payment plan is costs are deducted from the payment provider we use per payment and this helps to cover admin etc.
-
The 9 months of exercises on our online learning portal, 3x one-to-ones with Seb or Dental team to assess progress and run through any additional questions you may have and the devices needed for this program. Most children will go through 3 or 4 different devices but this depends on each child. We also cover 1x lost/damaged device. Each device costs approx £125.
-
No, not at all. We can ship the devices anywhere, so you can do this practically from anywhere as long as you have access to the Internet and a postal address to ship each device to.
