Pain Management
Medication: Use over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or paracetamol as recommended by your healthcare provider.
Cold Therapy: Apply a cold compress on the outside of the jaw or offer cold liquids to soothe discomfort.
Stretching Exercises
Purpose: Prevent reattachment by keeping the surgical site mobile.
Frequency: Perform the stretches 4-6 times a day or as recommended.
Techniques: Gently lift the tongue to visualise the surgical site. You can also do the suction and hold for 3 minutes and gently stretch open and close until you feel resistance.
Roll the tongue side to side and up and down.
Apply light pressure to the wound area to ensure the tissue separates.
Food
First few days following your surgery, chewing and swallowing may be more challenging due to the inflammation and stitches.
I would recommend soft colder foods for at least the first 2-3 days, or things that don’t need much chewing. Please avoid spicy or hot foods as these may irritate the wound.
After 7 days, and as your tongue continues to heal over the following weeks, try to practise mindful chewing and swallowing as this will be a huge factor in integrating correct myofunctional habits in your day-to-day life.
Speaking
The pronunciation of certain sounds requires the tongue to form different shapes in the mouth, this may feel strange at first and could pull on the wound/stitches slightly. This is normal, please don’t worry, it will settle after a few days.
Supplements
We recommend working with your healthcare practitioner to identify any specific supplements or remedies that may be helpful for you. Serapeptase is the one we recommend to take for 1 month post operative.
Toothbrushing and oral care
You can brush your teeth and use your interdental aids as normal, however please be careful of your wound and stitches. Minty or strong flavoured toothpaste may irritate your wound.
If age-appropriate, rinse the mouth with a saline solution to prevent infection. Apply the ointment that we provide at the clinic at least 3 times a day it can be more if it helps.
Keep the area clean.
